PM Olmert addresses special Knesset session in honor of British PM Brown
21 Jul 2008
PM Olmert: "I believe that Britain and Israel are closer today in their points of view than ever before. Together, we advocate a liberated world, one free of terror and violence; a solution to conflict through peaceful means; human advancement which utilizes achievements in science and technology for the betterment of mankind; a cleaner environment which preserves its natural resources and an ecological balance; and a market economy based on firm principles of social justice."
British PM Brown: "Today and in the future, the people of Britain and Israel will continue to stand together in believing that history sides with those who fight for liberty. To those who question Israel's very right to exist, and threaten the lives of its citizens through terror we say: the people of Israel have a right to live here, to live freely and to live in security. To those who are enemies of progress we say: we condemn anti-Semitism and persecution in all its forms. And to those who believe that threatening statements fall upon indifferent ears we say in one voice: that it is totally abhorrent for the President of Iran to call for Israel to be wiped from the map of the world."

Shlomo, Ehud Goldwasser's father: "If Nasrallah's great achievement was to conceal the fate of our sons, then I pity him and the Lebanese people. If Hizbullah's great achievement is the release of Kuntar, who is nothing but a repulsive murderer, then I pity them."

"The State of Israel is committed to continuing the process of political negotiations in order to bring about a stable, speedy and comprehensive solution to the historic conflict with the Palestinian people and with the Arab countries who have yet to sign peace accords with us... Israel also comes to the table with a large measure of good-will - the good-will to create partnerships with countries so that there will be economic prosperity and stability in the Middle East."

DM Ehud Barak recently signed an order banning 36 "charity" funds which are part of Hamas's fundraising network. By providing ostensibly "charitable" services, the Hamas terror organization promotes its armed agenda under a civilian umbrella, seeking to usurp control of the West Bank from the legitimate Palestinian Authority, as it has already done in the Gaza Strip.
The institutions indoctrinate youth with an ideology of terrorism and violence, and provide financial support for the families of killed and imprisoned terrorists - thus providing an incentive for terrorist enlistment.

It has been important to me as foreign minister to take actions related to Israel not just through the mirror of the conflict, and what we are launching here today and joining for the first time - an international agreement for a social and environmental commitment by businesses - has twofold importance for us. It is important firstly for Israeli companies, which are represented here, to be part of the agreement and of the global village we all share. Secondly is really to promote activities related to the challenges faced by the whole world.

Prof. Mike Turner, head of the Israeli committee and deputy chairman of the World Heritage Committee, said that recognition of the Baha'i centers as World Heritage sites represents an important achievement in the preservation of the diverse cultures whose histories are connected to Israel.

The Gaza crossings were reopened on Sunday (July 6), having been closed following the firing of a Kassam rocket on July 3, in another violatation of the state of calm. Israel views the rocket fire as a clear and flagrant violation of the understandings of the "state of calm."
An Egyptian initiative to end terrorism from the Gaza Strip and the resulting Israeli military operations led to a "state of calm," which went into effect on Thursday morning, 19 June.
