Sept 29, 2000 - Border Police Supt. Yossi Tabeja, 27, of Ramle was shot to death by his Palestinian counterpart on a joint patrol near Kalkilya.

Yosef (Yossi) Tabeja was shot at point-blank range by Palestinian policeman Nail Suliman as he rested in his jeep before they were to continue the patrol. An ambulance transported him to Beilinson Hospital, where he died shortly after arrival.

The two jeeps of the joint patrol had stopped for a rest break when Suliman suddenly shouted "Allahu akbar" ("God is great") and fired on the Border Police jeep.

Yossi immigrated from Ethiopia as part of "Operation Moses" in 1984. Leaving behind his family, he arrived as a child and lived with another Ethiopian family who viewed him as their son. He was later sent to boarding school, and his adoptive mother sent her own son with him so that he would not be alone. Yossi's mother passed away in Ethiopia. His father and several of his siblings subsequently immigrated to Israel.

Yossi excelled in his studies, and in everything he did. He served in the army as a paratrooper and afterwards was transfered to the Border Police where he served as an officer in the joint Israeli-Palestinian patrols in Judea and Samaria. He wanted to be a role model for other Ethiopian immigrants.

Border Police Supt. Yosef Tabeja was buried at the Ramle military cemetery. A community center was established in his name in Ramle, where there are special programs to advance the Ethiopian immigrants in the area.
